Here are the eight best sci-fi RPGs. Science fiction is a great genre for any medium of entertainment. These games are the best in the genre. If you’re a fan of movies like Stalker, which had various odd scientific phenomena going on, or 2001: A Space Odyssey (or the book version of that, for that matter) which revolutionized the sci-fi genre, these games will be worth your time if you’re a fan of the genre.

If you’re new to the genre or aren’t really familiar with it, I hope this list will prove useful and make you a fan. The games are not listed in any particular order and I avoid spoilers. So read on!

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Both Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 are seriously impressive and fun RPGs. Admittedly, they have aged quite poorly graphically. But if you’re a fan of Star Wars or any in-depth RPG like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Dragon Age, you’ll love them, I guarantee. I personally haven’t seen many Star Wars movies but these games instantly made me a fan of the franchise. BioWare is the developer and they sure know how to make RPGs. For example, they also made Dragon Age and Mass Effect. I (and many others, for that matter) consider them to be giants of the genre.

Deus Ex Franchise

Deus Ex is a sci-fi cyberpunk franchise set in a futuristic world where modifications to organic bodies and various improvements are abundant. It’s a really deep game and it tackles subjects like morals and ethics in an advanced society. While the most recent game, Mankind Divided is somewhat of a weaker entry, every game is really worth playing, in my opinion. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is my personal favorite and because of its revolutionary RPG elements and story, many others also consider it to be the best in the franchise. As for the gameplay, there are a lot of stealth elements and futuristic mechanics (for example, an in-depth upgrade system for the character and hacking) and it makes for a fun experience.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

Let’s talk about this pioneering and revolutionary RPG that inspired many other RPGs and sci-fi games. At the time of the first game’s release in 2007, there were only a few games that matched its scale of lore and depth. As I said in the entry for the KOTOR games, BioWare knows its stuff when it comes to making RPGs. The fine-tuned, overhauled, and rebalanced Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is definitely the way to play the franchise in the present. Especially the first game has been seriously improved and it can be enjoyed to the fullest as if it were a modern game.

Cyberpunk 2077

Despite its disastrous launch, Cyberpunk 2077 now delivers up to its expectations and it’s a really, really good Sci-fi RPG. It’s a really impressive game in terms of gameplay, story, RPG elements and world. It has been gaining more and more fans since the great Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released (it’s also completely canon and serves as a great prequel to the game).

Fallout Franchise

The Fallout games take place in the far-distant future where wars have caused the world to a become post-apocalyptic wasteland. But the technologies of the past still stand and often the games are a combination between the societies of the 1940s and the future. For example, Fallout: New Vegas is somewhat of a blend between the Wild West, the 1940s, and the far-distant future. It’s one of my personal favorite franchises because it’s not afraid to combine various elements of other media. For example, all Fallout games have many elements that are often found in Lovecraftian stories.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Franchise

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise is my personal favourite survival horror franchise. And yes, it’s mostly branded as a survival horror franchise. But its sci-fi elements are so unique and really interesting to observe. Many “anomalies” in the Zone are twisted and corrupted cases of laws of physics and other scientific phenomena. These anomalies have their own descriptions and they’re really fun to learn about. The cases of radiation and the noosphere are things that really got me interested in science. I guarantee this franchise will be one of your favourites if you’re into science and military-like shooter games. I also highly suggest watching the masterpiece movie “Stalker” (available for completely free on YouTube, uploaded by Mosfilm themselves) and reading the book “Roadside Picnic”.

NieR: Automata

NieR: Automata is a game where the main topics are existentialism and other philosophies. In both gameplay and story, it’s exceptional and the gameplay possibilities are many. There are a lot of endings and moments that can change your view of the game the more you think about them. It’s very replayable and it’s a really unique take on post-apocalyptic science fiction. I consider it to be one of the greatest games ever made and I highly suggest playing it. if you haven’t.

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus

Mechanicus is a game that doesn’t have a really in-depth story and the way you play the game completely changes upcoming missions and the endings. This is a game where it gets better with each playthrough. It’s also one of the greatest turn-based tactics games ever created and my personal favorite of the genre. It’s really, really difficult to get used to and it’s a great mental workout. As you get better, the more rewarding it is.
